Antrim’s Giant’s Causeway, Northern Ireland

The Giant’s causeway is one of the most magnificent coastlines with its stepped up natural rock formations which stand as a natural rampart against the unbridled aggression of the Atlantic storms.

The rugged symmetry of the columns never fails to intrigue and inspire our visitors. To stroll on the Giant’s Causeway is to voyage back in time.

So lets get into how the Giant’s causeway came into existence: The whole point of this Giant’s causeway is no more if there’s no mythical essence and the science logic.

Antrim’s Giant’s Causeway being 60 million year old, still stays intact with it perfect hexagonal rocks stacked up like millions of puzzle pieces.

There’s an interesting legend behind the Antrim’s Giant’s causeway:

According to the legend, an Irish giant named Fionn mac Cumhaill was challenged to a fight by the Scottish giant Benandonner.  Fionn accepts the challenge and built the causeway across the North Channel so that the two giants could meet.

There are two mythical stories behind the Antrim’s causeway:

  • In the first story, Fionn defeats Benandonner.
  • In another, Fionn hides from Benandonner. Fionn’s wife, Oonagh, disguises Fionn as a baby and tucks him in a cradle. When Benandonner sees the size of the ‘baby’, he reckons that its father, Fionn, must be a giant among giants. He flees back to Scotland in fright, destroying the causeway behind him so that Fionn could not follow.

The other side of the story is the science fact:

  • The Antrim’s Giant’s Causeway is the aftermath of volcanic crashing, burning and cooling. This is the 60 million old legacy with over 40,000 basalt interlocked columns.giante28099s-causeway-irelandNGS Picture ID:1278764

It is believed that this legend might be because there are identical basalt columns (a part of the same ancient lava flow) at Fingal’s Cave on the Scottish isle of Staffa. And hence the fights between the giants.

Countless travelers have marveled the majesty and mystery of the causeway. Around half a million tourists visit the aplomb Antrim’s Giant’s Causeway every year!
